I have been coming to SP & most belizean cayes since the 70's but its the first time for my friend to come. can anyone recommend a day trip
inland that is not hokey? are the connections to altan ha straight forward or do I have to go through everyone's cousin along the way?

I'd sure appreciate hearing from folks with experience
thanks

Try the Tropic Air tour to Lamanai.
You fly to Tower Hill airstrip(15/20 min flt). Take a short ride to the New River. Take a facinating boat ride down the river to the ruins.
Get to spend a couple of hours at the ruins with very few other visitors. Then back to San Pedro. You are back here around 1:30.

What makes the trip worth it is that:
1) You don't have to travel boat, bus, boat for at least 6 hrs (1 hr only at the ruins with alot of other visitors).
2) Best of all, you miss the cruise ship visitors.
They arrive at the ruins as you are leaving.

Tropic Air offers other tours, but I am not familiar with them.

Take time to smell the flowers!!!
The Lamanai tour with Daniel on Tanisha Tours was wonderful by boat, bus, boat because along the way he pointed out the plants and the animals that are native to the area and he answered questions. He entertained all day.
On the way to the mainland we had orange juice and butter buns for breakfast. The picnic he served at Lamanai was delicious. All the way home we had rum punches...boat, bus, boat!
I like flying from BZE to SPR to start our vacation. Then we get on island time!

Just got back from SP on Friday. Thursday my girlfriend and I went to the main land for the day. Rented a car, and drove to Blue Hole National Park. We hired a guide named Marcos to take us through ST. Hermans Cave and went cave tubing. It was possibly the best thing we did while there. He was great and says that he does tours all over the country, ruins, caves, and even jungle tours. If you don't want to be with a "tour group" but want someone to show you a great trip, I would suggest him. I have his contact info if you want it. Also keep in mind when planning a day trip that if you are going to caves or mayan ruins you have to hire a guide you can't explore them yourself.
