Before my friend and I come down in May, should we get the recommended travel shots? Is it necessary, or just smart to do? I am asking because they are not covered by my insurance and are pretty expensive.
Thanks, Karen

they are quite expensive. If you are just coming to SP you do not need to get shots. Recommend shots for long term stay in jungle or if you are moving you could consider but you won't need them for a trip.

Anyone travelling should have tetanus and Hep A, at a minimum. I recommend Hep A&B, though you are running out of time for full immunity. Regardless, you should start the series before you go, so that you have at least partial immunity.

Thanks all for the response! As I suspected, I waited too long, but I am dreadfully afraid of needles. I suppose you can't get the whole series of shots at once? I'm leaving for a week in Vegas on Thurs, and I don't want to be sick while I am there, however, I REALLY don't want to get sick in A/C!

We got them: Hep A (we already had Hep B) and Typhoid.

We're taking Chloroquine (anti malaria tablets 1 per week) since we are going into the jungle also.

Maybe some would consider it overkill, but I've seen both Hepatitis and Malaria firsthand. Worth a little expense and bother to me (IMO).

The advantage for the shots is you don't need to renew for each trip, they last a while. And believe me, once you've been to AC, you'll have a hankerin' to come back!!

I just made the appt for ALL the shots at once, and to get the Chloroquine script! Not too bad $$$ wise, and well worth it to not get sick! We are going to do most of the trips and will be in the jungle going to the ruins, I suppose! Better to be safe than sorry! Bringing lots of mosquito repellants as well! I just hope I don't pass out at the sight of all those needles! UGH!

Cali, you can't get all shots at once. Hep A takes nearly 6 months, it is 3 shots and Hep B takes a few months two, 2 shots. or vice versa. I got Hep A, B, yellow fever shots because I have no idea where I will travel to since I am so spontaneous when it comes to seeing new places.

You will get partial immunity. Start the shots regardless and finish up the program when you get home. You will, no doubt, be travelling again and they are shots you should have for home anyway.
