But beware of viruses. Everytime I have brought my laptop to Belize I have picked up a computer virus of some sort that has to be cleaned out when I get home.

I have lived in Belize for a number of years and only once have I encountered a virus.

Belize is very up to date in technology and provided you regularly protect your computer with anti-virus software you will have no problems whatsoever. i got many more viruses in the UK.

In San Pedro many places have free internet access and wireless so come and chill on La Isla Bonita.

Viruses are no respecters of location. There are far more viruses and people trying to spread them than there were even a few months ago. Reputable anti-virus software regularly/frequently updated is essential. Also essential are anti-spyware measures. There's no need to spend a fortune on any of this - there are excellent free market-leading products in both fields.

Don't forget to do a complete system scan at least weekly, and when downloading anything at all, via email or any website, do a specific scan of it before you attempt to open it. I use Limewire for file sharing, and frequently find a virus embedded in a file I've just downloaded.

I tried using the computer in the gift shop of our hotel to confirm our airline reservations, and gave up after 10 minutes. It was soooooo slowwwww (pop ups galore). I can't begin to imagine how many illicit programs are on that computer.

Also, when using a computer other than you own, make sure you delete the history of visited websites. When I went to delete mine, there must have been over 200 websites listed, including credit card companies, banks, etc. If I wasn't so honest, I could have reaped a fine harvest of personal information. I deleted all of them 'cause I'm a nice guy.

Coming to you from the beautiful Oley Valley.

Would I be better off to bring my own laptop or just use a computer at one of the internet places? All I really want to do is check email and dump photos from my digital camera.

Anybody know how far away the nearest internet place is from Exotic Caye Beach Resort? Does it have wi-fi?

Good point Mikeh375.
Five years ago I accessed my aol account in a internet place on the island.
When I came back in the States, they closed my account and the reason was very rude behavior in chatrooms. Since I never spent time in chatrooms I assume that they got my login info in the internet place and had a blast pretending being me...lol

patatjemet,

I own the CocoNet Internet Cafe here in San Pedro. I can't tell you how many times a day people not only leave themselves logged in but actually change the settings to automatically log them in upon restart of the computer or browser. You probably left yourself logged in without realizing it and some bozo just jumped onto your session.

Our policy is that when we find a session left logged on, we log it off.

Come on down and bring your laptop. 15 min free internet with any drink.

Steve
