The village of Seine bight was the only Garifuna village hit by hurricane IRIS and the Belize chapter of the World Garifuna Organization has been quick to respond to needs of the villagers. The entire executive of WGO Belize traveled together to visit the village, following their monthly meeting held in Georgetown Village last Saturday, October 13.
Most of the villagers were still in a state of shock after the storm, and WGO chief Dr. Ted Aranda met with the village chairman Leonard Williams and also interviewed several other villagers, which were documented on video.
WGO vice chairman Francis Lewis of the village of Hopkins said his village escaped the effects of the storm and were the first to respond, providing cooked food and clothing for their neighbours in Seine Bight. The WGO is also lobbying to ensure that the people of Seine Bight get their fair share of any relief supplies.
