Greetings all, this is my first post! Our vacation is way on in May of 07 and I want to go now! I am so excited. as you can see I do a fair amount of research. I have read tripadvisor.com and come up with these two places to stay based on:
- others rave reviews
- the hotel's websites
- the rave reviews of "amigos del mar" dive outfit who services MataRocks (White Sands has their own dive operator)
- their prompt replies to my email with lots of detail.
- location; by san pedro
- scuba packages; reasonable rates
- need accomodations for 4 people

which one would you recommend, and why ?
I appreciate your kindness,
Nancy

I don't know about Mata Rocks, but I stayed at White Sands Cove March, 2006 and have reservations to stay there again March, 2007. They are pretty remote, it would be a very long walk into town, you can rent golf carts there by the 1/2 day or day or the water taxi or the private water taxi they use. The grounds, pool and condos are beautiful and very clean. We stayed on the 2nd floor in the very front right on the water, the view was beautiful. There are no restaurants on site but a couple within a short walk. Everyone that works there was great! This is not a "resort" it was very quiet while we were there and no one was there other than the people staying. We loved it! If you have any further questions email me. Hope this helps.

I stayed at Mata Rocks in May 2006, and enjoyed it very much. Their off-season rates were a real bargain -- and I see you will also be there off-season. Clean, small complex, with every unit having a sea view.

I'd stayed at Belizean Shores in January 2006, and loved it, too. That was a large condo, whereas Mata Rocks was a small accommodation. Both were great choices, top-notch for their niche in the lodging scene. I enjoyed walking to town from Mata Rocks -- did it every day. Not possible from Belizean Shores, but the water taxi worked fine from there.

Have fun!

We have been staying at Mata Rocks for ten years. Obviously we think very highly of it. It is a small complex with nice rooms and some Jr. Suites.

The Squirels Nest bar is located about 50 feet from the hotel and is a great place to hang out and get a nice refreshing drink or ice cold beer.

The owners, Terry and Liz, a great people and the have a wonderful staff working for them. If you want a laid back, clean, comfortable and safe place to hang your hat, I personally don't think you can do any better.

Whereever you decide on you will simply love the island, have great trip and enjoy!

Thanks so much for the info!! Like I said, there are many rave reviews to read for both places. when a person goes back to a place for 10 years that says ALOT! I do like the idea of the bar being very close. The other 'vote' for Mata Rocks is that their dive company 'amigos del mar' was also highly praised. Thanks so much everyone !!! wish it was May !
