High Level Distinguished Guests to Join in Belize’s Independence Day Celebrations

Many high level distinguished guests have accepted the invitation of Prime Minister Said Musa to participate in the 25th Anniversary of Belize’s Independence. Invited guests will join in the official flag raising ceremony on the night of 20th September and in the official ceremony of 21st September. Among the many distinguished guests who have accepted the invitation of Prime Minister Musa is the President of Panama, His Excellency Martin Torrijos. This will be President Torrijos’ first official visit to Belize since his Presidency began on 1 September 2004. Whilst in Belize, Prime Minister Musa will confer the Order of Belize on the late General Omar Torrijos who was fervent in his support for Belize’s quest for independence. President Martin Torrijos, the son of General Torrijos, will receive the honour in his name.

Other High Level distinguished guests who have accepted Prime Minister Musa’s invitation include:

• Minister of Government of Cuba, His Excellency, Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz whose country’s relationship with Belize is defined by cooperation in a wide range of fields;

• Secretary General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), His Excellency, Dr. Edwin Carrington who has been to Belize on numerous occasions attending meetings on behalf of the CARICOM;

• The Special Envoy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and former Foreign Minister of the Republic of China (Taiwan), His Excellency, Tan Sun Chen whose country provide full scholarships for Belizeans in a several areas of study;

• Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), his Excellency, Albert Ramdin, who benefited from the votes of Belize and the other CARICOM member states for the post of the Assistant to the post of Assistant Secretary General.

At least 30 non-resident ambassadors accredited to Belize will also be in Belize for the 25th Independence Anniversary.

09/20/2006 - World Leaders Congratulate Belize on the 25th Anniversary of the Country’s Independence

On the eve of the anniversary of Independence Day, Prime Minister of Belize, Rt. Hon. Said Musa, continue to receive letters of congratulations from world leaders.

The President of Italy, H.E. Giorgio Napolitano and the President of the Republic of South Africa, H.E. Mr. Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki, have both conveyed congratulations to the Government and people of Belize on this milestone occasion.

The Prime Minister of St. Kitts & Nevis, H.E. Dr. Denzil Douglas, has also conveyed his congratulations and best wishes.

A similar message was received from the United Nations Secretary General, H.E. Mr. Kofi Annan, extending his warm congratulations to Belize and his anticipation of Belize’s continued commitment and involvement in seeking multilateral solutions to global challenges.

Today, Minister of Government of the Republic of Cuba, His Excellency Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, the Special Envoy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), His Excellency Tan Sun Chen, and the Secretary General of CARICOM, His Excellency Edwin Carrington, arrived in Belize and will be participating in official activities in commemoration of Belize’s Independence.

Later tonight there will be the annual fireworks display which will be followed by the official flag raising ceremony. On the morning of the 21st September, all invited guests will be joining Belizeans in the formal Independence Day ceremony during which the President of the Republic of Panama, His Excellency, Martin Torrijos will accept, from Prime Minister Said Musa, the Order of Belize posthumously on behalf of his late father General Omar Torrijos. Thereafter, President Martin Torrijos will confer the Omar Torrijos Herrara en Cruz award on the Rt. Honorable George Cadle Price.

Yes, but what is there to celebrate that has happened over the past 25 years? Is it Belize's improved economy, the strength of the currency, elimination of government corruption, improved personal prosperity of its citizens, development of value-adding industries, reduction of crime, or what?

i may not know lots about history on belize but people still love to celebrate who they are and be proud of where they come from.

Most of us here love Belize and its people. We're celebrating our survival as a nation over the last 25 years, recognizing that there are problems but looking forward to a better future.
