Thanks everyone!

What about money? Should I bring much cash or will credit cards get me by for the most part? Maybe a dumb question, but is there a way to get cash once I'm there...pretty new to international travel here.

lawcucui, are you serious? I think that's an awesome idea. I'd love to be able to help out the children. Not sure just how many books I'd be able to bring though!

they have ATM's there... just make sure ur pin code is 4 digits

so u can use ur credit card or banking card... personally i only bring enough cash for the frist few days and last few, the rest i rely on my credit & debit card!

Hi Bigsky:

Before you rely on your bankcard for cash, check out the fees. Most banks charge an international transaction fee of around $5. On top of that is an undisclosed fee that Belize Bank rolls into your withdrawal (think it is around 2%). Travelers Checks are a much better deal.

true... but i used my bankcard there a couple of times and no charges other the the 2.50 they normally charge for pulling out of an ATM that doesn't belong to ur bank!

Travelers cheques are good yeah but i found them to be just a pain in the but to cash in! I hated carring my ID around with me everywhere... but if u do take T.C's cash them in the grocery stores and other shops... they don't charge u to cash them like the banks do...

but this is all from personally experience.:. so to each his own!

Holy Cross Anglican School is also taking donations for kids. (if you have any room)

Kids vitamins, school supplies, bandaids anything like that is a help.

I agree on ziplocs too, they can be very handy.

Also if you like a magazine to relax with I would bring oen not so good a selection on the island.

I'd suggest a small fanny pack; most swimsuits don't have pockets and if they do, they're likely to be wet pockets. Small here refers to the size of the pack, not the fanny (at least in my case). Also, one of those doohickies that attaches to your shades so you can hang them around your neck; very handy on a a boat.

bigsky - very serious!
No need to bring a lot, just a couple of books suitable for children - the good thing about donating to the library is that the items are available for all the kids on the island as opposed to just those at a particular school. The preference is for hardbound books as they last longer, but the library receives little govt funding and will be extremely grateful for anything you bring. The library is kinda my pet project so feel free to PM me if you'd like email contact info and/or ideas for specific books.

Ida:

The Belize Bank fee is rolled into the amount withdrawn. There is always a bit extra tacked on. Your hotel will usually cash Travelers Checks, too.
