After much research, we finally were successful in our search for info regarding the regulations for bringing in USDA meat into Belize.

According to the Belize Agricultural Health Authority, one does need an import permit to bring meat into Belize...even for personal consumption. However, the office was very helpful and we actually have a permit in our hot little hands right now!

In order to obtain our permit, we just called the above office (phone 011-501-24-5230) and asked about a permit. They told us all we had to do is fax them (same phone number) a list of exactly what we would be bringing in (all meat has to be USDA inspected).

We did this and voila...two days later they faxed us a permit!

We are to present this permit to the quarantine officer at the Belize City airport along with our USDA meat, pay a $10BZ fee for the permit...and presto jingo, we are ready to BBQ on the beach!

Hope this helps anyone else interested in bringing meat in.

This should help with meat importation questions.

We learned since our last post is that you may email your request to them at baha@btl.net.

Also, when we arrived in Belize City last time, we were charged $25US because of the "faxed" permit....you never know. Still better than having the meat confiscated.

Good luck!

I just wanted to say that we had some very good tender beef when we stayed at the Pook's Hill Jungle Lodge. You can see the healhty and happy looking Belizean Beef grasing in fields on the way to the resort. No mad cow's there since they only eat what they should eat. Grass!!!
