I've just learned that there was a recent hold-up of some people going from Melchor to Tikal and that three people were KILLED! Can anyone comment on this, advise on safety of our going with a Chaa Creek tour?

I have not heard that story but my husband and I went from San Ignacio to Tikal in late October -- no tour, just us, crossing the border and hailing a van to haul us from the border to Tikal for $10 each. No problem and we felt completely safe all the way. I would not worry about going with Chaa Creek.

I don't know what possessed me, but in reply to your other message I typed "killed" when I meant to say "raped." Three people were raped by bandits when a bus (not a tour bus, a regular bus) was stopped by Guatemalan bandits on the road to Tikal. Can't recall the exact date but it was late October/early November. Raped is bad enough but I didn't mean to say killed. Sorry!

I would say that Chaa Creek is a highly professional organization, and they will be sure you get to Tikal safely.

Sorry again for my stupidity.

We just went to Tikal in early December and were very worried about the trip as well. We went from the Hidden Valley Inn and went in a private car (Cayo Adventure Tours) with a guide. We had absolutely no problems and I couldn't even imagine how that could happen in the beautiful drive. We made sure to go during daylight hours and we were happy to be going in a private 4x4, rather than a big tour bus or regular city bus. I didn't even know about the report you noted, I probably would have freaked out even more! But no problems for us, I'm sure you'll love the trip and the site.
