My friend and I both teachers, 1 from Michigan and 1 from Dallas, texas will be coming to AC on Wednesday. A few questions from a couple of rookies:

1. Is it really cheaper to go to the local airport in Belize City and catch a plane to AC? Someone said it was half price $23 US

2. WE are doing the Lamanai trip. Will we need hiking boots, repellent, anything else one may need?

3. Are there ATMS? Is it easy to get cash or should we bring travellers checks?

4. Mepersonally, am a snorkler, not a diver. Should I spend the $125 or so going to the Blue Hole or spend less and go to Shark Ray Alley or elsewhere cheaper.

Hope to here from someone and thanks.

Hi: I just did the Lamanai tour last month. Just wore plain old Reeboks. Do bring bug spray, you will be in the jungle and I used mine.

as a snorkeler, save some $$ and skip the blue hole. in 2 trips, i have not bothered.

shark ray, hol chan, mexico rocks & the aquarium are all super snorkel destinations. i suggest you bring your own mask & snorkel.

i do not think there are atm's. first trip i did travelers checks, second trip just cash & plastic. the better restaurants and most gift shops take plastic. all are happy to take your US dollars or traveller's checks, and most hotels will change them. there is a bank in town.

always bring bug spray, ya never know. hiking boots are unnecessary. i don't know of the plane thing. i paid $84 US last year.

bring lotsa ziploc bags. they really come in handy.

I are a teecher also:^]
Yes it is cheaper to fly from Municipal than international BUT...
All US flight arrive at International and it is NOT worth it to transfer to Muni and fly from there. Many domestic flights, Placencia for example, will go to international then to muni and there is no extra charge to continue to muni. That is when Muni is a worthwhile deal. Does that make sense? You can also save money by taking the water taxi but IMAHO fly. You would have to schlep to town than time it right for boat. How long are you there for? If only a week fly. If longer consider boat to save $. There is also a slightly cheaper grocery store across the swing bridge from the ferry.
You could easily do Lamanai in shorts and tevas or khakis and sneakers. No hiking boots needed. There is no "hiking" only a walk of about a mile or less on flat ground--not counting the optional climb to the top of pyramid.
There is [I'm pretty sure ] an ATM on the island but it seems unreliable. I would still do checks and cash. Keep the checks small as large bills are hard to cash.
I also agree with PaJane about staying local to snorkle--depending on time and budget. Although I do feel remorse to not have seen this natural wonder that is blue hole. Like going to Paris and not seeing The Eifel[sp] tower. it will be a long-ass boat ride. I think most first time non-divers do not do blue hole.

piano,

As usual the gang is right on it. Do Not Count On An ATM. Plastic, travelers checks, and good ol' US cash are just fine. Forget the Blue Hole. Even if you were a diver you can't really see what it looks like from the water. Buy the picture taken from the air, hang it at home and tell all your friends you got REAL close to it.
