Is it pretty easy to catch a bus to San Ignacio from Belize City?
Then, once we get to San Ignacio, would we be able to find a ride to a resort (we haven't decided which one yet, but probably Clarissa Falls, Chaa Creek Jungle Camp, Black Rock, or possibly Five Sisters) or do we need to make reservations somewhere ahead of time and schedule someone from the resort to pick us up????
Thanks for the information!

Yes, it is easy (and a fun trip) to take the bus to San Ignacio. Tell the taxi driver that you want to go to San Ignacio and to take you to the appropriate bus depot.

Unless they have finally joined the two together...there are two operating terminals.

Take the Express bus....you will be glad you did. One leaves from one station at 10 or 10:30..and from the other station around 11am. The cab drivers know which is which.

Once in San Ignacio....any of the cabs can take you to the resorts....most are not far from Town. Clarissa Falls is about a 10 minute ride out of town...nice place.

I wasn't real impressed with the food there....but I hadn't had a chocolate shake in over a year...and it was damn good...LOL [Linked Image]

The grounds are beautiful..and the falls are nice. Be sure and take a pair of water shoes though...the bottom is nothing but rocks and painful to walk on barefoot.

When we were in San Ignacio in April, we simply got off the bus and were approaced by a taxi driver. There will be plenty of people around to offer rides. The cost will depend on the vehicle, the distance and the quality of the road. I think we were charged about $30 U.S. for a ride from San Ignacio to Chaa Creek, but it's a few miles down the road and the actual road to Chaa Creek is horrible. I felt sorry for the driver, whose car was getting bounced around and scraped up. We fared better on a subsequent trip with a gentleman with a mini-van. It withstood the bumps and shakes much better.

We ended up taking a cab from San Ignacio to Xunantunich and home again, and later from Chaa Creek to Central Farm. In every instance, the ride was far cheaper than what the resort wanted. (although their vans make for a very comfortable ride.) Our cab drivers were very friendly and offered rates to take us sightseeing to various locations, so perhaps you could get a better deal if you wanted someone to show you around later on.

Finally, we found the bus system pretty easy to use. Nothing was really marked, but we just asked people which bus to take, got on, and reached our destination.

Have fun!

GC....Belize City(BC) is on the mainland, Ambergris Caye(AC) is an island, no bus service, either fly or take the "water taxi" from BC or Corozal.

For bus schedules for the rest of Belize try:

Clarissa Falls is only about 3/4 of a mile from the Western Highway, so you can walk there.

Chaa Creek is about 5 or 6 miles from the highway and Black Rock is even farther, so you will need to arrange transportation. Chaa Creek has an office in San Ignacio so you could get off there and go to the office for transport. Black Rock is owned by the same people who operate Caesar's, which is directly on the highway, so you could be dropped.

Taxis are an option, but basically to Chaa Creek or Black Rock they will charge you almost as much as if you took at shuttle van from Belize City (Aguada's Mercedes shuttle is US$25 per person, and Discovery Expeditions' is US$35).

The bus schedule Web site is hopelessly out of date and useless for the new bus situation in Belize (basically the only major bus lines are Novelo's, Southern Transport and Northern Transport and all are owned by Novelo's). But there is lots of service going west -- just go to the Novelo's terminal.
