DIRECWAY High Speed Internet is now available for Belize and Mexico. This system now uses a 33-inch antenna and normally operates at 800-2000 Kbps download and 50-100 upload. The new promotion is as follows...

Pay $600 Up-front, plus shipping to [wherever]. Pay the $200 activation fee during installation. Then pay a $59/mo unlimited fee for its use. You must remain a customer for a minimum of one year.

There is also a current promotion that we have not yet launched that will allow a $200 in advance, then $99/mo for the first year (this includes monthly service). At the 13th month your monthly service would drop to $59/mo.

Installation of this system will be determined by local installers. We have a few that we would recommend, and others that we would recommend that you stay clear of.

We will be in Belize near the end of this month installing a few of them - if anyone would like a demonstration.

Yes, just like Dish or DIRECTV you would have to use a US address and pay with CC Autopay. The payment from your CC pays Dish Network, Directv, or DIRECWAY, not us.

Thank you,

Great news Mel:
I have a couple of questions:
1. I assume this is full 2 way access?
2. Can you get the internet/TV combo dish and receiver? If so, how much for the hardware, and how much for the combined monthly cost?
3. What kind of software setups are available (if any) for transient computer use? For example: If I had the dish and modem in my condo and wanted to allow guests to use the internet with their own laptops, is there software that they could download in advance and simply just hook up the dish modem to their laptops for email and browsing? (I have rental units and might consider buying a system if it could be set up that way...).

Am I assuming correctly that the prices are in U.S. Dollars?

Will you be servicing Caye Caulker also?

How to sign up for a demonstration?

Ditto on Susan's question re: do you have combo internet / tv dish?

Yes, this is full 2-way 24-hour access. Yes, the system can be networked. The system only has a USB modem that connects to your first PC. From there you can network to the various rooms. They would all share this connection, and the result would be somewhat of a slowing of the up and down speed.

All prices in US Dollars. I do not want to publicly display with whom you could get a demonstration from, but will gladly do this on a personal level with the customers permission, for obvious reasons.

Combined TV and Internet? It will never happen, not with US TV anyway.

Yes, anywhere in Belize.

Mel: Please clarify what you mean about "networked," since that is not what I asked (or at least not what I meant to ask, sorry for the confusion).
Here's the scenario.

1. Dish is installed. Satellite modem with USB connection is there.

2. There is no computer that will be permanently attached to that modem and no computers will be "networked" to each other. The condo is a rental occupied by different tourists each week.

3. Week #1: Guest Johnny Doe brings his laptop to the condo, hooks it up to the modem, logs on and checks his email various times during the week. When he leaves, he takes his laptop back with him.

4. Week #2: Guest Jane Doe brings her laptop to the condo, hooks it up to the modem, logs on and checks her email various times during the week. When she leaves, she takes her laptop back with her.

And so on and so on......

MY QUESTION: Is the above scenario feasible?

1. Must a computer be hooked up to the modem when it is first installed, to "initialize" (I am sure that can be arranged)?

2. How do the guests access the modem with their laptops? IS THERE SOFTWARE THAT THEY CAN DOWNLOAD IN ADVANCE OF THEIR VISIT so that they can use the connection with their laptops?

3. If the answer to #2 immediately above is no, can the satellite internet access software be put on a diskette that can be made available to each guest, so that upon arrival they can download the software and thus use the satellite connection?

As you can see, this is a different scenario than a private residence, because the primary purpose is to let condo guests have a way to connect to the internet without running up huge phone bills.

If you can create a way to make this scenario happen, I suspect you will get a lot of new business, since hotels and condos will very much want to offer net access to guests as an amenity. On the other hand, most of us are not willing to buy a computer for each unit or room. And most visitors want to use their own laptops, they need internet access because they need to check on business matters while on vacation.

I will email you privately about the other stuff, but I suspect others would like to know the answers to the above, and that is why I am asking publicly.

If you only had one condo, you would need to setup a host PC. This PC would always be connected to the DIRECWAY System. The DIRECWAY System would be connected to a Network hub, and this hub would have an Network cable available to your guests, whom I assume would bring their a PCM Ethernet adapter along. This is the same item that they would use when they stay in a hotel, or connect in someones office.

There are no additional charges for usage of the system, no matter how much they used it, and anyone could log-on at anytime provided they knew how.

This means that you would need a permanent computer there (for networking purposes), otherwise you would have to install software into the guests PC each time they arrived.

If you elected to have them install the DIRECWAY software each time a new guest arrived, you would want someone locally available in case they were not sucessful with the installation of this software.

Thanks for the clarification, Mel. In view of the above, I'll pass for now. Only a slight fraction of my condo queries demand on site net access; most people are happy to let vacation be vacation and if they want a casual email check, they can visit the local internet cafe. Not worth it to me in cost or hassle to set something like this up for the casual use of people who rent my two condo units. People who need more than what an internet cafe offers can stay at a hotel that offers net access (I think there are several that do offer it now...)
Furthermore, with the price of Idirium satellite phones and per minute charges heading down even more, most people who are so business driven that they must email from their hotel room on vacation will soon be equipped with satellite phones. Right now, we are paying $1.62 per minute for Iridium for the boat; I predict that within a year, the rate will be half that. Within 2 or 3 years, it will probably cost no more per minute than your typical (US) cell phone charge costs now.
But the DirecWay system is great for people who live down there and I am sure many will sign up. I will definitely get one when we get our house in Panama built.

Thanks for posting this info, Mel. We will be on the island May 23-June 1, and would love to see a demo.

If I can get high-speed internet access, I can work in Belize, and hubby can retire. This is looking pretty exciting.
