Hi! I will be coming to Belize this week and will be there for ~9 days. Can anyone recommend a route to cover the best of Belize, MUST see sites, etc? Recommendations on places to stay or eat would be great too! We are backpacking and don't mind roughing it a bit. Thanks much!

Hi, the more research I am doing I would like to spend more time on the islands but YES there will be some time on the mainland. We are open to anything.

in '93, we styed 7 days in cayo/belmopan, then 3 on AC.

our 3 funnest things:

- xunantunich was very cool.
- horseback riding thru the jungle from banana bank ranch
- pine mt ridge nat'l park (1000 ft falls/rio frio cave, and just driving the jeep over the wet, muddy mountain trails - yeee haaa! real 4 wheeling!!)
- golf carting with new friends around ambergris

You might want to try a few days in Cayo and a few days in Caye Caulker. Caye Caulker is a fairly budget island destination.

The Portofino is north of town, but it is a wonderful place! We just got back from there and I can't say enough about it.

My hubby and I stopped in Caye Caulker last year, and honestly, were a bit disappointed. The trees were down, from Hurrican Mitch, I believe, so it was VERY hot with not much shade. Also, it just seemed like more of a college kids, party town. We much preferred Ambergris Caye. It just depends on what you're looking for. I think Caye caulker is a bit cheaper, though.
