It's almost official: St. Matthews University (SMU) is leaving Ambergris Caye. That is the bad news. The good news is that the creative mind and founder of the original properly run St. Matthews has partnered up with the established and respected Medical University of the Americas (MUA) to set up campus here. The first semester is already half way completed.
Ambergris Caye will remain a major center for medical education in the Western Caribbean/Central America. I have checked the MUA web site at
http://www.muabelize.com and any student wanting to pursue a medical career will have a flying start if they can complete the MUA's very demanding course work. Clearly MUA is not for students looking for an easy ride....those who graduate will likely be the cream of the crop in the medical profession.
In the meantime, SMU is telling their students they're moving to the Cayman Islands. If students thought it was expensive here in Belize, wait until they order a rum and coke on Grand Cayman!
truebelize has been a critic of the Government of Belize on this board, but on the subject of the development medical educational facilities here in Belize they deserve credit for encouraging such initiatives.
