Any firsthand ideas for lodging in San Ignacio/Santa Elena area? Looking for something reasonably priced, clean, needn't be fancy - maybe in one of these towns as we'd like to try the different restaurants, etc and will have a car. Anyone have any info on the Aguada in Santa Elena? Thanks!

I highly recommend the Aguada in Santa Elena. At US$25-$30 double with A/C, and with a pool, it's the best deal in Cayo. They have brand new rooms, too -- on the back side. If not there, then I'd say Martha's Guesthouse in San Ignacio would be my choice among the in-town places. --Lan Sluder Belize First www.belizefirst.com

Thanks Lan - was hoping to get your two cents worth. Sounds like what we're looking for. I say we're set! Do you know if they have a website? Wondering if we should make reservations? (Have your mainland book and it's great!, tho don't have it w/me).

Although I have seen very few rave reviews of Cahal Pech Village, I have stayed there three time and will be returning next week. They serve an excellent meal also. And to take the short walk to the Cahal Pech Ruins in the early morning, with the morning mist hanging over the ruins, is like walking into the Garden of Eden....at least for me.

Snowbird, Aguada's web site is www.aguadahotel.com I think I would make reservations, as they are very popular due to their rates. You might not need to book ahead, but why take the chance? Also, you can arrange for their mercedes van to pick you up at the airport for US$25 per person. --Lan Sluder

It's best to book the Aguada. Their reservations for winter and early spring are filling up. I've been spending a fair amount of time in Cayo and I always try to stay there. Can't beat them for nice clean rooms, freshwater pool, great restaurant. They are reasonably priced so they get people from Belize City coming out to Cayo for the weekend. During the week, they have primarily tourists. --Silk

If you want to stay in San Ignacio, I recommend Martha's. Good location, nice folks, very homey feel and restaruant right there, for those "late nights" when you get back from tours and dont' want to have to search for a place to eat.

Cahal Pech Village is nice. It's up on the top of a hill overlooking the town. Just below (a walk down from the hill) is Cahal Pech Maya Ruin. It gets a bit noisy over the weekend, however, when the live music kicks in at palapa bar. Cheers, Wendy A. [email protected]
