Last year about a week after 9-11, I got an e-mail from a retired NYC firefighter. He said he had been dreaming of a vacation in Belize for about 6 months, and had been all over the internet learning, etc. He also said he needed to plan a vacation, if only to get his mind off his daily "work" "on the pile" at WTC where he was deep in body parts and tears. He wanted an "unbiased" person to help him evauate some things, and asked me if I could advise hinm a little. This fireman and I begain a pen-pal relationship.
On October 8, Hurrican Iris hit. Fireman Bob and his sons and nephews (all firemen, all alive) talked about Iris, and in the midst of their daily tasks at WTC, they dug deep into their savings and sent me a seriously substantial check to give over to whoever needed it most for relief efforts. It was well used for building materials in the South. THEN these wonderful guys sent down a big box of FDNY - 9-11 T-shirts ..... all to bolster the spirits of those working and giving. THAT is giving.
In June the fireman came for a visit. He'll be back. And when he comes, he plans on staying a while.
