is it really necessary? Side effects (especially sun sensitivity) make me nervous about taking these drugs for a 2 day Tikal trip, and negatively affecting my week in AC after Tikal.

Also, know this is a princess-y question - but are trail running sneakers with treads/thick soles good enough? Have hiking boots, but they're hot, heavy and less comfortable - I'm trying to travel lite (carry-on), and priority is snorkeling equip/bathing suits!

Any input appreciated!

We did the malaria immunization thing both times we went to Belize. Better than to get the disease, which is horrendous. BUT, some folks don't like the side effects, so if that's the case with you, skip it. Tikal is huge, parts of it quite remote and wild, other areas flooded with tourists. It just depends on how thoroughly you want to cover it. We spent just about 1/2 day there, which was not enough. But wouldn't have missed it for the world. wink

I was there for only one day, there is a lot of jungle but I didn't even think about antimalarials and I'm one of those people who think sometimes that no matter how short of a time I'm somewhere I would find that one mosquito.... : ) Check the CDC sight and see what they recommend. Usually they only recommend it if you are going into some of these areas for an extended amount of time. I think you'll be fine with a good bug spray ( I use Jungle Juice found at REI) and some simple cover up. Have fun.

Thanks again Kathy! There's so much conflicting info out there...and I know malaria isn't fun. I'll stop worrying now! I know this is a question for a doctor, but mine is a GI specialist (despite fact I don't have stomach problems, but that's another story).

Thanks Trina too! Will be there on a Sunday and 1/2 of Monday - so hoping to avoid the cruise passengers...but expecting some crowds during prime time.
