Can anyone recommend a hotel that would have a "house reef" close to shore so that we could snorkel from the beach. We are avid snorkelers and find ourselves disappointed by hotels that say there is snokeling just offshore only to find there is nothing but sand and grass to see.

I realize that we'll need to take some boat trips to see the really good stuff but it's nice to be able to just go off the beach too sometimes.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Unless you were a beginner or a child, I don't think any close-in snorkleing could sustain you. Some resorts offer free or low-cost kayaks that you can paddle out to the reef and then, if you are agile, jump in and snorkle aroud. Some people are uncomfortable with this due to boats zipping around. My wife & I did it and had some success. The in-close stuff will be sparse.

Caribbean Villas Hotel has a 300+ foot pier with a manmade "reef" of rocks, etc. underneath the sun deck that has quite a bit of wildlife and is fun to snorkel. HOWEVER, no close-in snorkeling near the shoreline is anywhere as good as out on the reef.
