I have a 26' Balboa sailboat that I would like to trailer down to Belize. I plan on spending around 4 weeks cruising around. Anyone have some tips on the the best route to take? Would the roads through MX be a problem for a pickup/trailer combo of this size? I'll be starting out from Houston. I've given some thought to the Yucatan Express Ferry but that would entail a fairly lengthy trip just to get to the boat. How feasible would it be to leave the boat in Belize after my 4 weeks? I would expect to have to pay taxes/duties. Any other paperwork hurdles I would have to jump? Are there any reasonably priced and safe dry boat storage facilities in Belize? Thanks for any info you can provide.

I've done the trip, and yes... pulling a boat. It wasn't worth the expense, danger and harassment. It took us about 6 days to get thru Mexico, and we kissed the ground when we got to Belize. By the time we got to Belize I thought I was going to have a stroke. I would never ever ever ever ever do that again. Also, you can't leave Belize unless you take the boat out, or pay the duty. If you use the search feature in this forum you can find others who have done this. But for me, and I think Sanshaker will agree (she drove thru Mexico), it can become a disasterous trip, you become a target.

We did this very thing a couple of years ago. Guess we got lucky but had no problems in Mexico. Ours started when we got to Belize. HUGE hassle to cross the border into Belize. 2 days of paperwork later, we turned around ,drove back up to Cancun. and threw the boat in the Sea. No problems.. A day later we were in San Pedro having sailed there in less time than the paper work was taking. Clearing in and out of Belize was no problem by sea. All in all it was a fun trip but not worth the hassles. I could of bought or rented a local boat for less $$.Be sure you have good charts the reef is covered with bits of wrecks from unlucky sailors who thought they knew where they were ....but were not.
