Has anyone stayed at Captin Morgan's Retreat. If so, any thoughts? After reading this message board, I get the feeling that the beaches and ocean are not the "broucher" looking beaches that one would expect to see in the Carribean. We have recently returned from Cozumel, and are hoping to find similar beaches. The clear blue water with pristine white sand beaches. Can this be found in Belize? I would greatly appreciate any info

the captain's would not be my choice.

that said, most people do not come to ambergris for the beaches. they are white & the water is clear & blue...but that's just not it.

it is the feeling, the people, the relaxation.

here is a nice beach pic from the south end of ambergris:

Have been to Cozumel, Cancun, Bahamas and several other "brochure-type" beaches in the Caribbean. Visited AC for ten days this April. Except, perhaps in the north of AC, the long expanses of uninterrupted white sand you are talking about are not common on Ambergris Caye. Lots of nice people, good food and contentment available but Ambergris Caye is not really about picture-perfect beaches.

Didn't stay ther but ate at the resturant a couple times. Had pretty good chicken dishes and very nice staff. Not cheap though, but on the north end no food is that we found.

We just got back from San Pedro and spent a morning looking around Captain Morgan's. You would enjoy it and there is plenty of beach there. They also offer free kayak usage, nice pool, free snorkeling equipment, etc. The biggest problem for me is that it's three miles from San Pedro, which doesn't sound like much in the US, but there it takes about 20 minutes. The restaurant is good, extremely picturesque. Did you know Temptation Island was filmed there?

Cap't Morgans is a very nice hotel and has a nice beach (and salt water pool) but the sea there is prone to lots of sea grass. Not that it's a total deterrent to staying there but you asked....

There is a lot of sea grass - I had forgotten about that - and it is a deterrant - they were out there in the morning raking it up, but it is pretty heavy in that particular area.

Sea grass that floats in to shore/beach is an off and on thing. Some days there is a lot of it, some days there is none. It depends on the day, the weather. Kind of like the leaves that fall in the autumn, the snow that falls in winter and the grass that needs cutting in summer ........ Sea grass won't hurt you - it's just a nice little plant that protects our shores from erosion, and is as soft on the bottom of your feet as the green grass in a yard up north. Relax and enjoy !
