After reading these posts, I get the feeling that Belize is centered around Divers. Are there any "swimming beaches" on AC? If so, what hotel has the nicest beach and pool? We especially enjoy pools with swim-up bars. As we are not Divers, is there ample oppertunity for snorkling? Also, whats up with the sea-grass I've been reading about? Does it make it wierd for swimming in the ocean from the beach? Any advise/information would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks to you all

Keep in mind, first, that Ambergris Caye is not all there is to Belize. It's just one island out of several hundred, albeit the largest. And then there's the mainland, about the size of the state of Massachusetts.

Ambergris Caye definitely is not centered around diving. Twenty years ago, most visitors to Belize and to Ambergris Caye were divers. Now a majority, including visitors to Ambergris Caye, do not dive.

Due to the barrier reef just offshore, the beaches inside the reef do tend to have shallow water and seagrass. However, you can swim off many beaches including many areas on Ambergris Caye. Hotels usually remove seagrass from an area at their piers to make for better swimming. The Caribbean is usually warm and clear and makes for pretty good sea swimming. Many hotels, especially on Ambergris Caye, also have pools.

AC is not just about diving. Maybe at one time like Lan says but no longer. There are plenty of swimming beaches and most hotels also have a swimming area off their pier. I would say the hotels with the best swimming beaches are Ramon's, the Mar de Tumbo area by Banyan Bay, Tropica & Banana Beach, Caribe Island Inn & up North by Mata Chica. Many of these also have pools. Plus the beaches are all public so you can go to any of these beaches even if you stay at a different hotel.

I asked the same question before we went. we stayed at ramons and the beaches are fine - the pools are great (Ramon's doesn't have a swim-up to bar area, but it is like a lagoon pool and they serve drinks and you can enjoy them on the little benches in the pool.

Snorkeling easily takes the place of diving - Ho Chan is not to be missed - unbelieveable - unbelieveable.
