Hello, My family is planning on an extended stay in Belize but would like to travel around until we decide where we want to stay. Can anyone tell me how excepted dogs are in Belize? Do many hotels allow them?

I know a few people who travel around Belize with their dogs, so you can do it. A lot of hotels would probably accommodate you, assuming you maintained close control over the dogs. However, I wouldn't say it's common, as most visitors don't bring their pets, and most Belizeans (there are exceptions) think of dogs more as guard animals or watchdogs than as indoor pets.

A lot of hotels and lodges keep dogs to help in security, and there are quite a few homeless or stray dogs around, not to mention things like snakes, scorpions and killer bees, so you'd have to keep a close watch on your animals.

Thanks Lan for the advice. SNAKES, KILLER BEES!!
It is a small dog too. I hope he doesn't end up being dinner. Just bought your book on Belize today. Great reading. Hope to meet you someday.

We live on AC but have taken our dog with us to the mainland with no problem. We hired a car rather than try to take her on buses, and last trip we stayed at Chaa Creek who were fine with us bringing her (she's a german shepherd cross so a fair size).

So long as you let the hotels know in advance and don't expect their honeymoon suite! you should be fine.

We helped out the gang at Mango's with there Puppy, to bring the pup to the states!
We had no problem with Tropic Air, they didn't even ask, she sat in my lap the whole ride over, and no problem at inter. airport. Went right thru!! Hope this helps.

My dog is writing a travel guide to Belize and has been too busy to finish it just yet. She goes just about everywhere and I find that most lodge owners would rather have her as a guest than me. I would certainly check first if it's okay. Some places already have animals on the property that might not get along with yours and guests don't want to be bothered with dog fights and extra barking.

Ask first, or have your dog beg.
