Chaa Creek: Attracting Honeymooners and Baby Boomers

The Lodge at Chaa Creek has been recognized with the 2002 Cond Nast
Traveler Ecotourism Award, one of many such honors related to the
environmental side of travel that this nature retreat has received
over the years.

There's good reasons why The Lodge at Chaa Creek has been recognized
with such distinctions as the 2002 Cond Nast Traveler Ecotourism
Award, one of many such honors related to the environmental side of
travel that Chaa Creek has received over the years. That's because
this private 330-acre retreat set along the banks of the Macal River
in the foothills of the Maya Mountains is as much a nature reserve as
it is a tourist get-away. "I think people are looking for real life
experiences that will enrich their spirit. Holidays that offer
more-not only relaxation but cultural exchange and nature. Here,
people get lost in another world. There over 70 Mayan ruin sites on
the Chaa Creek property alone," says Lucy Fleming, who owns, operates,
and oversees Chaa Creek along with husband Mick.

Chaa Creek was the first jungle lodge in Belize, established in 1981
with humble beginnings. The Flemings eventually grew their lodge into
the lush, simple yet sophisticated retreat that it is today, true to
its full name: The Lodge at Chaa Creek Rainforest Reserve, Adventure
Centre, and Spa.

The Chaa Creek Jungle Lodge is comprised of 19 comfortable
palmthatched cottage rooms and two luxury suites. The Macal River
Jungle Camp, located within the nature reserve a half-mile down river
from the lodge, features ten fully-screened casitas, each having two
comfortable beds with fresh linen and a private sheltered porch for
quiet relaxation and peaceful views in the undisturbed jungle habitat.

Visitors and guests can get a fascinating overview of Belize's
archaeological, cultural and natural wonders at Chaa Creek's Natural
History Centre, recognized as one of the best displays of
archaeological artifacts, butterflies, moths, insects and amphibians
in the country. It includes a research room with archives of
scientific studies in Belize that is often used by students. In fact,
one anthropology student at UCLA recently based his thesis on Chaa

A conference Center is available for a range of meetings, seminars and
other functions. The Blue Morpho Butterfly Farm at Chaa Creek allows
visitors the opportunity to observe the full life cycle of this
beautiful, blue iridescent tropical queen of the butterfly world. The
Spa at Chaa Creek-set above the Macal River Valley with a panoramic
view of the Maya Mountains and lush Caribbean rain forest offers a
variety of services including massage therapies, facials, body wraps
and scrubs, and hydro and aroma therapies.

Fleming says Chaa Creek attracts a wide range of clientele, from
honeymooners to baby boomers. "Our guests are explorers. They enjoy
the timelessness of Belize and the friendliness of Belizeans. They
can have as much adventure as they are up for, or also just relax on
their decks watching toucans, go for a swim, or hang out at the spa,"
she says. "There's a lot to do right here but we are also a stone's
throw from Xunantunich and two hours away from Tikal. It's very easy
for people to do whatever they want here, and that's what holidays are
all about."

Just so, Marty. We went there a few years ago, and totally enjoyed it. Visitors, do keep in mind that if you have an extra day or two, trot on down to Evas Restaurant in San Ignacio. More likely than not, they can get you a 50%, or close to it, discount if they aren't busy. Not to mention, other places in the area.
