We're coming down for 1st time this August (11-20) and I'm trying to figure out where to stay in San Ignacio or environs. Parrot Nest looks very interesting, but Martha's, Aguada, Trek Stop, etc also sound good and some are cheaper. It's my fiance's first time traveling outside the good 'ole US, and I want him to see the world my way, but don't want to shock him to death either! I've been traveling solo with my pack on and off since 1991, but never done Belize. Where would you all recommend?
Also, I want to spend 2 days at Tikal, and stay overnight at the park so we can climb to the top of Temple V for sunrise. Am I going to need an agent to book us a room for the night or in August is it likely to be empty?? I went 2 years ago and had to use an agent for the Tikal Inn, which was pricey but worth it for the early morning privacy in the ruins. Can we just do the bus to the border then hop in a minivan on the Guate side as I've read on these boards and expect to find a room? Thanks so much everyone!

My husband and I stayed at Martha's in San Ignacio. It was quaint, clean, very basic, and right in the middle of town. We enjoyed staying there. We used it as our "hub" for day trips (Tikal, Mountain Pine Ridge, etc.). Their restaurant was also decent. After eating Belizean food in AC for 5 days, their pizza really hit the spot!

Give Parrot's Nest a try - clean, basic, quiet, right on the river. Good & ample food...great hosts (or were)

Lan - do Theo & Chris still own it?

Theo and Chris still own, but do not operate. They are now in Belize City and leased PN to another person to operate.

confused So would you therefore recommend NOT staying at Parrot Nest? This is exactly why I wanted to check with you guys, so we don't find ourselves operating on very out-of-date information! Lan or Mayatravel, where do you recommend?

I enjoy staying at Midas Tropical Resort. Its cabanna's on the Macal River on the outside of San Ignacio. Its not fancy, but its reasonably priced, clean, and everyone there is very helpful. Hodes (a resturant) is only a 1/2 block away and the middle of San Ignacio is about 5 blocks away. Guides will appear daily. They do have a web site for reservations or just show up. They will hook you up.

Parrot's Nest is probably better now that Chris is not on site. I found him rude and obnoxious. Wife was nice though and setting is lovely! I have also been sending clients to Smith Family Farm on the outskirts of San Ignacio. $25/nt for individual cabanas. Family run and pretty basic but very friendly & good location walking distance from town & the river (diagonally across the street from Midas). Not daily maid service however. Great place to meet the locals.

Cahal Pech Village, San Ignacio Hotel also recommended if you want something a bit more mainstream (and possibility of A/C). I have eaten at Martha's (great!) but not seen the rooms. I have seen the cabins at Trek Stop and they are clean but amazingly tiny! Not much bigger than a tent! Great ice cream served there. I have not seen the Aguada.

Tikal trips can easily be arranged once you are there or can be booked in advance through someone like Maya Travel.

Ditto with Turnbun on Martha's. I recommend. BUT, get a reservation if you want to plan on it. Restaurant is decent, and it's a good locale for day trips to Tikal, caving, tubing, etc.
