Is this a particular pig? Just any pig? Female pig? Male pig? Not like it makes any difference to me, understand. I would just like to know who says this, how did they determine it, and were any government grants involved.

It is a male pig. It is well known as there are people who extract pig semen for a living. Depending on which country you are in, there may well be grants available.

Hi collyk!!! Long time no see.... Since this subject has come to an oinking halt I will just change it. How are things going over in your part of the world? Have any animal stories to tell us? My boy is much better - he is allergic to something inhaled - don't know what yet but probably mold.

Hi Malibu,

I have been around, but because it gets a bit prickly in here, I don't post often. Well the UK is having a bad time like a lot of countries, bad weather, political scandal, troops abusing people they have liberated etc etc, so UK morale is not at an all time high. It might just be the circles I move in, but no one I know in London wants to live here anymore.

Animal stories? Well I get those every day. I just placed a cat with an organisation called Canine Partners. They are, in my opinion, the best assistance dog organisation in the world. The standards to which they train are incredible and without wanting to sound anti american, they have demonstrated that cruel equipment and training techniques such as those used in the USA to train assistance dogs (ear pinch, pronged collars etc) are completely unnecessary. Everything is done with behaviour shaping techniques. Anyway, I had brought up this cat to be confident in any situation so he could be used to socialise dogs. The cat was a kitten abandoned by a client. Unfortunately he became too confident to live in an urban environment so he is now a puppy socialisation cat which is very important for these dogs as they cannot be distracted when they are on duty. So Ramses the cat now has a huge farm with loads of poeple, dogs and puppies (and rats to hunt) and the neighbourhood is free from the local ginger thug.

Glad to hear your boy is better. Allergies are a real pain!

Anyway, I'll be in Belize in a couple of weeks, so I am just counting minutes and seconds now!

collyk - unrest a problem here as well. Along with good comes bad.... We just try to keep trucking along....

I agree with you on the training techniques issue. I train with positive reinforcement only. Don't even need a leash except for with the most rambunctious of dogs. Even potty-training is successful using positive reinforcement. (Except now one of my guys will pee on command...laugh...) Great to hear of Ramses. This is an excellent way to teach thug-dogs about the ways life should be. We come across some real buggars at our pound who, unfortunately, have been tought to fight. A real shame. When will you be in Belize? I am arriving Feb 16. Maybe I will see you there.
Take care...

Hi Malibu,

Great to hear that you are promoting positive training methods. We need more of you guys out there! I am interested in hearing that there is any other approach to toilet training though. In over 80% of the chronic house soiling cases I see, the vast majority were caused by the owner using punishment when they tried toilet training. I do remember the old wives tale stuff about rubbing their nose in it which any normal, sensible person would realise is completely illogical not to mention rather messy and unhygenic. Dog fighting in this country tends to be big money so the dogs are too valuable to end up in shelters. Most of the dogs we see with chronic dog/dog aggression problems weren't intentionally trained to be this way. Anyway, enough of this boring shop talk. We are in Belize from the 2nd to the 25th of Feb. In AC for the first week only. If you do see us there, I'll buy you a drink!
