I seem to have run into a major problem bringing my dog Willy with me in June. I am arriving in Belize June 4 and am told by A.A. they will not ship my dog if it is 85 anywhere along my route, well it is hot in Belize in June, has anyone else run into this problem and if so how did you solve it. We got Willy from the Saga Soc. last summer and he is looking forward to going home! As we will be in S.P. for at least 6 months leaving him behind is not an option.

Monica, Travelqueen is right. I'm having to fly Continental when I go up to get my parrot (when US FISH & Wildlife ever issues the permit) because American doesn't allow pets in the cabin on intl flights and they won't accept them to fly cargo as soon as the temps reach 85 or higher. You don't say whether or not your dog is small enough to fit in a carrier under the seat...if not I'd check out Continental real carefully as to what special considerations they have for shipping pets via cargo in the summer...

I honestly can't figure out why people would bring their pets along for a vacation for a week or two. The pet isn't going to know that it's on vacation. Look at the red tape and misunderstanding it creates already.

I wouldn't fly my animal in cargo period. The animals are not properly monitored before during or after the flight until you actually make contact with it. If you have a dog too big to put in a carrier under the seat, I would drive him down. I surely wouldn't put a bird in the cargo. I've heard of horror stories of injuries to birds in that situation. I'm not saying this to be judgmental of your intent, but just to remind you that cargo travel for pets is a very risky situation no matter what the temperature or time of year.

TACA will fly your dog down (unless policies have changed very recently.)

Denny can't read - she said 6 months not one or two weeks.

The animals are well cared for all along the way and have individuals assigned to take care of them at stopover points. The whole embargo was started due to a problem with a few animals during the heat wave summer a few years ago. Problems are not common but the larger airlines decided to implement an embargo in any case. In general your animal is at no more risk than you are.

Give Kathy a call at 011-501-601-8777 for more advice, she ships 15-20 adopted dogs a year to the States.

Thanks everyone for the input,I think I have it sorted. Hopefully it won't be 85 the day I fly and he can come with us on A.A., if it is I will send him out a few days later on Continental, alot more money but we'll get him there. Thanks again.
