Hi everyone, I'd like to know if anyone has driven from Belize city to Placencia recently and what the trip was like. I have a family of 5 and the plane fair is about $70 each, one way. I haven't checked out the rental rates yet.

I made the drive from BC to Placencia this week. It was lovely. Great scenery and a chance to stop at some nice spots along the way.
Don't miss Belize Zoo, Art Box Gift Shop (belmopan entry road) and the Inland Blue Hole.
If you are hungry the Texaco gas station near the Dangriga turnoff has good chicken tortas. You do need to plan on the family feed for the trip - after you pass Cheers, JB's and Amigos (all next to each other on Western Highway) you are fresh out of restaurants til you hit Placencia.
Rental rates for cars are a bit hig, but you can see so much more with a car - if you can swing it, I'd get one.

I agree with Diane -- it's a great drive. And paved all the way, assuming you go the Hummingbird, except for the last 20-some miles. Just keep in mind the time and distance -- about 150 miles and three-plus hours from the international airport.

One really important thing about driving that route - do not do it at night. There are places along the way where the road narrows to one lane to cross creeks & culverts. In some of these spots there are no side-rails, and no signs announcing that you are approaching such a crossing. If you miss one of these and plunge 4-8 feet down into water you could have a catastrophe on your hands, and nobody coming along til morning to help.
DO make the drive if you can - but do it while you can clearly see the beauty (and the road) along the way.

Thank you again. I wouldn't make the drive at night.
