BTIA SUPPORTS PLAN TO HOST THE 2005 MID AMERICA X-TREME RACE IN BELIZE

Mid America X-treme is the fastest growing extreme adventure sport in the world. These races vary in length from 2-8 hours and up to 18 hours for adventure Racing Series and between 4-7 days for the international C2C and the X2 (explore the x-treme) races which includes whitewater rafting and canoeing, running/hiking, mountain biking and navigating, kayaking, mountaineering, horseback riding, hiking/trekking, tubing, caving, and depending on the location, additional events such as sailing and paddle boarding. On January 22, Mike Polzin and Brian Weber of Mid-America X-treme Racing visited Belize and met with various public and private sector stakeholders from the Government of Belize, the Belize Tourism Board and the Belize Tourism Industry Association to garner support for a November 2005 race in Belize.

Mid America X-treme has been in contact with the organizers of the La Ruta Maya Canoe Race. Their last X-treme race was held in Costa Rica in 2002 and they were looking for the next ideal location for this sporting event which draws international media coverage and travel and sport magazine writers. They were in Belize seeking the possibility of having Belize be the next venue for the November 2005 race and would like to start planning for it. They even thought of the possibility of branding Belize as the home country to the race and have it here annually, if it works out well. The company is in the process of signing an agreement with one of the US cable networks that will air the event. For this reason, they are asking for letters of support from the various stakeholders they met with, including the BTIA who has agreed to lend technical assistance to the event. Both the BTIA and BTB has issued them a letter of support for the event.

The BTIA supports this 2004 event in Belize and invite its membership to do the same. If you should like more information on the BTIA's support to Mid-America Xtreme race, you can contact Andrew at the BTIA National Office or email [email protected]. You an also contact the race organizers, Mr. Mike Polzin at Mid-America Xtreme Adventure Racing, N5806 Pioneer Drive, Sullivan, WI 53178; Telephone 262 593 5283 or email [email protected]; or visit the website at http://www.adventureracing.net.
