Many Caribbean countries suffer the curse of drug trafficking, not just in the Western Caribbean. We were dicussing the cultural and political aspects of Belizean history...definitely Caribbean in origin.
We have almost no trade with Central America, but quite a bit of trade with the Caribbean. Mexico has far more trade with Cuba than it does with Belize.

Actually, the discussion started out as one about why Belize was not part of CAFTA and my original answer was that Belize is already party to a trade treaty for Caribbean countries rather than those in Central America. So if your "Belize is a Caribbean county" comment was a response to the initial question, then we've said the same thing and that is the comonnly proffered explanation for why Belize was excluded from CAFTA.

Whether Belize would benefit at all from being a party to CAFTA, and conversely whether there is a downside to them not being a part of that trade agreement, is a different matter and Belize's geographical location can't be ignored when considering that issue.

Many of our existing trade agreements are with U.K., ex: bananas, citrus, sugar. It's doubtful that the relatively small exports from Belize would do better on any other market.

I would tend to agree. I really have done a fair amount of reading about Belize since our first visit. I'm not sure the relationship between US/Belize has made much difference one way or another. I understand that US exports to Belize total just under $152 million a year - and it seems to me Belize has done a good job protecting the few industries it does have from western competition. Still, Belize exports to US are greater than to UK. Most recent figures I could find were U.S.$86.7 million(53.8% of total exports), U.K.$37.1 million (23.0% of total exports), and it would be disingenuous to say geography doesn't impact that. Which brings me back to the question of whether CAFTA would have been good or bad for Belize in terms of duties and export fees alone. Totally a moot point now, but still an interesting discussion.
