My husband and I will be staying at Blancaneaux Lodge July 9-12. We plan on doing a Tikal tour and cave tubing trip. Does anyone have any suggestions on jungle attire? Will we need pants? We have hiking sandals similar to Tevas. Will these be sufficient or will be need hiking boats? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Hi...We just returned from 14 days in Belize with four being spent at Chaa Creek and an overnight to Tikal. We were fine in shorts and tennis shoes. We were prepared for hot and miserable, but honestly it was so cool to us because we are from Arizona! We thought the day time weather was great. It was hot on our overnight at Tikal with no a/c at the hotel and our kids (17 and 20) say it was one of their worst nights ever smile ...but I didn't mind it and would have loved a couple more nights there. In hindsight a day trip to Tikal and then back to Chaa would have been ideal...but it's hard to know until we tried it. No problem with bugs, but sprayed deet to make sure. We were so in awe by Tikal and the beautiful jungle around Chaa Creek that we wished we'd spent more days there and less in San Pedro. We forgot our binoculars...really missed having those for close up views of monkeys and birds. I hope that we are able to take a return trip to the Mayan areas again! Have a wonderful trip. Enjoy...Kathy

Thanks for the insight chattykathy. After hearing what you had to say, I think we'll be fine with the weather. We're from Sacramento, California. We're spending 3 nights in the jungle and 4 nights in San Pedro so we can get a little of both worlds and see what we like best. I'll be sure to pack my binoculars - 18 more days and I'm chomping at the bit.

We took the Tropicair trip to Lamanai from San Pedro on the 14th. It was great. We are not regular hikers so we were glad we had sneaks in the jungle at the ruins. And the 95% deet spray from REI worked wonders on the mosquitos. They swarmed but did not land.
