The Belize Foreign Policy Yearbook 2003 was this morning introduced in Belize City. This was done by Foreign Minister, Godfrey Smith. Commenting on the yearbook Minister Smith said the issue of foreign policy is something important.
SMITH:"Once you become a country that is independent and sovereign whether you like it or not you have to engage in foreign policy the minute you begin trading, the minute you begin doing business as a country, the minute you begin doing political dialogue of whatever kind you have to have a foreign policy. Foreign policy is the instrument as is pointed out and recorded by Victor Goldberg Thomas from the World Institute of International Affairs. It is the instrument that guides and shapes interaction between countries of the world, so once you take the decision that you wish to be independent and sovereign among comes with that foreign policy you have to engage with countries you have to further your interest whatever those may be whether political, economical or otherwise and if we are to be engage in that business like we have been for a number of years then it is only right that we have in duty of obligation not only to ourselves but to our primary practitioners but to!
the Belizean public, to our colleagues, ambassadors, to the world at large."
Furthermore Smith said the book will be updated and published each year.
SMITH:"It is always a delicate exercise because we engage in diplomatic relations with so many countries and a country might not be featured but it might be that be for that year there was no major event. This thing is intended to be annual, so every year whatever development arise should be tackled on so please do not look at it as an intent to cover the past it presumes that readers will know what existed up until 2003 and then attempts to make an overview of some events for the year 2003, so basically that is what it attempts to do."
Copies of Belize Foreign Policy Yearbook can be obtained at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the City of Belmopan.
