anyone have a suggestion for a cool place in mexico without all the tourists....i need a large house or 3 villas on the beach....i saw a place on the travel channel thats up the coastline from cancun a fair piece...cant remember the name though....
Just read something in the paper yesterday about a place around a 90-minute drive north of Puerto Vallarta. Article was talking about "Sea Turtle Camp" as an interesting educational opportunity and chance to be an "eco volunteer" during nesting and hatching time.
Beach villa rentals at Playa Las Tortugas. Don't know anything about it - but here's the address... www.playalastortugas.com
Check out Todos Santos, N of Cabo, but a totally different feel and experience. It was just coming back to life when I was there a couple of years ago. And found the BEST pulled pork burritos in the world from a little street vendor.
***But only if Belize is out of the question ***

Toad - This link will take you to a little fishing village about 40 miles north of Manzanillo. Not too touristy and very much like San Pedro. Lots of places to eat the local foods.
Todos Santos is a cool little spot. I didn't like La Paz (sorry Gela). Too much city with drug-store like shops, although the malecon is pretty. Akumal on the Yucatan is nice, beautiful and quiet - between Belize and Cancun. I have not yet been to Zuitathaneo (spelling) or Ixtapa, but everyone I know who has raves about it.
Punta Allen if you want to see the authentic Costa Maya/Mexican Caribbean. The biosphere is globally unique! Mostly fishermen as AC was a few decades ago. Xcalak is also a great place - awesome fishing, great diving.
Isla del Carmen (not Playa del Carmen) is amazing! Not discovered yet. Just across the Yucatan from Cancun on the bottom of the Gulf. Wikid!
For colonial - try Oaxaca.
Huatulco is the new spot the Mex. Gov. is pushing on the Pacific. Still in its infancy as far as tourism. Great surfing.
