For those of you who know people who have applied for a US VISA or who have applied yourself, is it best to have letters of recommendation writen to the US Embassy about the person or a personal letter writen to the applicant stating you are inviting them and responsible for their trip? should the letter be writen to the US Embassy or to whom?

Any advice is appreciated.

and does one have a better chance if they apply for a 1 month VISA vs. 4+ months? (not to stay 4 months but to be able to travel more than once to the US in 4 months.)

I think it depends what country they're from. My former boyfriend came from Australia on a 3 month visa and we didn't do anything more than the application. He had to state that he had funds to cover the trip and at customs they check that he had a return flight booked already, but that was all.

I was on that website and all the links from it last night. The US embassy and gov't does not answer my questions or give tips as far as letters of invitation or recommendation. It only tells you how to apply, which I understand.

Thanks so much Katie. Snorkelgirl, good to hear your experience. I am told it is much harder for a Belizean, especially when they are not the one covering expenses for their trip and are invited by someone.

Anything to prove that you have no desire to live/work/stay in the U.S.A. other than for a holiday:
Belize bank accounts
Property ownership
Morgage
Dependents in Belize
Long term gainfull, current employment in Belize

I don't think that letters of reference other than one from your current employer have much bearing. With the exception of who you will be staying with.

My friend had proof of all that, AND proof that he was completely financing his own trip. He was still turned down for a visa to visit Canada.

The government response was that they were not confident he would return home, which just baffles me.
