A new Cuban medical team arrived in Belize to offer services for a two-year period as part of the Integral Health Program underway in that Central American nation since 1999.

The group, made up of 22 doctors, an electro-medicine expert and an X-ray specialist, will replace other Cuban specialists that concluded their assignment in Belize.

Most of the Cuban doctors will be assigned to clinics in the capital Belmopan as well as to villages located in the northern and southern parts of the country; while one will work on a cay off the mainland.

Cuba's Integral Health Program team in Belize is made up by 103 doctors, nurses and technicians and has taken specialized medical assistance to remote areas where such services were previously not available.

During the first five years of work in Belize, Cuban doctors saved 7,000 lives and conducted over a million doctor's consultations.

Belize obtained its independence from Britain in 1981 under the government of George Price, who is considered the Father of Independence. Earlier this year, Price was awarded Cuba's Jose Marti Order by President Fidel Castro.

Thank you Cuba. These men and women are a life saving group of professionals who have served Belize well. I applaude them.

We have a Cuban doctor on Caye Caulker at the public clinic (located in the same building as the village council - in case anyone needs to go there) I have always found the Cuban doctors to be well trained, compassionate and very professional. I don't know what we would do without them. Let's hope we never find out.
