Supported by Conservation International, the Belize Tourism Board and the Belize Hotel Association and using the Caribbean Association of Sustainable Tourism (CAST) methodology, the Environmental Walk-through project is the first step towards educating resorts on ways to reduce negative impacts on the environment. One such Belize resort, Hamanasi Adventure & Dive Resort will become an instrumental partner in assisting properties in becoming more eco-friendly.

According to owner Dana Krauskopf, “Hamanasi Adventure & Dive Resort has
practiced ecotourism since its inception. When we originally built Hamanasi, the preservation of trees, homes to countless birds, bats, lizards and orchids were saved. Rather than cutting down the forest to add more rooms, we simply built our treehouses amidst the trees.” Krauskopf further added, “We have also set aside over 10 acres as a nature preserve, have minimized our use of pesticides and chemical based fertilizers and flood the hotel rooms with natural light, reducing our energy usage. Building environmental and cultural awareness and respect for both visitors and hosts has been imperative to our resort.”

Ecotourism is also about giving back to the communities in which you operate and
Hamanasi Resort also provides financial benefits and empowerment for local people. Many local Garifuna dancers and drummers perform at the resort, numerous items are donated to the local health clinics by the resort and guests, education funds for employees are provided, various community projects are funded, including building and contributing to a playground for the children of Hopkin’s Village. In addition, Hamanasi, a PADI 5 Star Gold Palm IDC Resort has assisted many of the local people in learning to dive and training them to professional levels, many of whom now are employed as dive-masters at the resort and throughout the country.

Besides giving back to the environment, guests can experience the beauty of Mayan Ruins, virgin rainforests, caves with ancient artifacts, exotic plants and animals through Hamanasi’s inland tours. For those who are divers or snorkelers, Hamanasi’s professional, PADI certified staff will help you explore miles of the pristine Southern Barrier Reef, and three of the Caribbean's four atolls.
