Could someone please give me the names of the schools in San Pedro and possibly an estimate of the enrollment and a guess of the number of kids not enrolled. Thanks.

The only "public" elementary school is the RC school. There are several "private" schools. Enrollment at the RC school is estimated at 900 +/- a few. Last year they had to turn away in excess of 100 kids because there was no more room. Thats why the SPSC and The Calendar Girls have raised enough funds to build additional classrooms at the RC school plus assist the new school being built. For additional inf, please PM me.

That is so awesome to be able to do that!

Is there a need for volunteers there??? I think that would be a lot of fun... really get into the culture!

Thanks tacogirl - know anything about the school? I know that the parents must pay for the kids to go to school on the island, but is this one of the more "public" schools?

For more details, there is a stationary post at the top in Ambergris Caye section Novascotianuts.

The school area is right across the bridge and to the left (beside a green house)

While there is a fee to go there in the beginning, I think they are trying to make it free if possible. They also are looking to start up with a lunch program and hopefully get a breakfast one on as well when they can.

It is from kindergarten to grade 2 right now but will go up to grade 7.

Any donations for school supplies are happily accepted. Also volunteer time to help get the buildings up and running.

I have been getting people stateside to send school supplies and the post office has been generous to wave the duty fee on packages for Holy Cross Anglican School.

Here is a list of some useful items incase anyone is interested.

Chalk, color pencils, crayons, markers, pens, regular pencils and erasers, rulers, stickers, pencil sharpeners, anything for arts and crafts, glue sticks, kids scissors rubber stamps/ink pads, paper, notebooks, paper, elastics, any library books.

Beyond just school supplies to things like

Fist aid kits, band-Aids, topical ointments, children's vitamins, tooth paste, tooth brushes, plastic drinking cups, as all that stuff is much cheaper stateside.

Anything that school kids and teachers would need back home they can use here.

Thanks Dude, looks like progress is being made. They were supposed to be completed by the start of school (Sept4). When was this picture taken?
The Holy Cross school (which we, the San Pedro Social Club, are also supporting) has all three classrooms up and almost complete. Maybe, just maybe, no child will be turned away this year.
