I have been considering driving to Belize on my next trip for the reason of having a car on the mainland. I live on AC, so I would hafta find a safe place for the car. Does anyone know if duty is great for an old car? I have looked at the Retirement Residence Program which I would quality. Is there a personal property tax on old automobles (1984 BMW)? Thanks. PS. Does anyone know of a safe place to keep an auto in or near Belize City?

I brought my 1984 Nissan pickup down last year. I keep it behind the security gate at municipal airport. I simply fly in from the island and take off. The duty for it was $600.00US. You go through a broker to handle that. It's not hard really, just time consuming like everything else here. Then of course you need Belize plates and insurance. They have inspection stickers as well, though I'm not sure exactly the criteria for that. Mine passed is all I know. The run through Mexico is interesting to say the least. Be careful.

Sounds great, Dave. How much would ya sell dat truck for? Does Municipal charge you for keeping your truck there. Sounds like a great option. Take care: Bill

No, I don't pay to keep my truck at municipal. I have friends that arranged that. The truck is not for sale. My circle of bro's use it quite often. We all pitch in on maintenence, insurance ect. You know how it is here...We all need to pull together. If you have a friend in Belize City you can probably arrange a simular deal. Give, and you will get.

Thanks for your help, Dave. Sounds like a good set-up with your truck. I've become fairly good with dealing with the public bus system, but it is difficult to get off the beaten path. Next time in Belize, I'd like to do some independent travel in Toledo District. I understand crossing the borders in a private vehicle is a hassle, so I don't necessarily want to go there. Take care: Bill PS. I enjoyed your performance late Saturday Night at Fido's just before Skinny left.
