When I move to A/C I would like to bring my own furniture. Sofa & love seat have solid oak frames and side pieces are teak. Someone questioned how they would hold up in the humid salt air. What about brass & glass book shelves?

A lot will depend on where you are living and where the items are in your home. The wood should stand up fine (we have an oak table we brought with us) but if it is in direct sunlight then it will fade very quickly. The brass will rust/turn green in the salt air, and the glass shelves will need constant cleaning.

Have you considered native Rattan Furnisher made in Belize. They have a retail store across from Iguana Gardens Apartment in San Pedro and their factory store is on Humingbird Highway just before gettin to Belapan. Its really great stuff. Authentic Belizian Furnisher. While it is expensive, shippin from the US is too. I believe that they have a web site that can be accessed from Ambergriscaye.com. My home is furnished with Menonite Furnisher which is durable yet inexpensive. Good luck!

Thanks for the input. I'm sure there is a lot of stuff I would want to get down there, but like most Americans, I have STUFF that I am attached to.
There must be minimum prices for shipping in so I would like to maximize the amount.

Bill: Are you the Tradewinds guy who got married there was it just before Mitch or Jan. of 2000?

Not me. I'm still recovering from my last marriage ending in '78.

If you would tell us where in the country you are that might help. Several Belizeans run overland routes from the LA area. If you are close to that area they would be the ones to contact. Last year freight charges were running about $1.00 a lb. Imagine that they have gone up. But your stuff can be part of a bigger load going down or a whole truck. Just depends on how much money you are willing to pay. So give us an idea of where you are.

This is what I love about this message board.
Also the attitude of the people I have met here and on the island.
I live in the San Francisco bay area. I will spend a couple of months on the island next fall. Then back the 1st of the year 2003. That's when I will actually decide to buy/build/rent.
As the time nears I will ask for more specific information.
The $1 a lb. is a good starting point.
Thanks
