I have a table and chairs set of top quality wrought iron furniture that I would like to bring to my new home. Is there anything special that needs done to protect it? How does wrought iron hold up with the salty air?

Unless you like the color of rust you should for wood furniture. EVERYTHING metal rusts, even the stainless flatware!

Asked my husband this question, and his solution is to have the wrought iron powder coated. Its not cheap, and needs to be protected very good during shipping. If it gets a knick in it, you'll need to fix it right away so it won't rust.
We bought our place with wood furniture in it, and the wood ants (I call them termites) ate the chairs until they fell apart. I had to throw them away.

Wrought iron is very heavy to transport. Perhaps aluminum instead??? Less weight and it doesn't rust.

I have a top quality wrought iron table set, here on the South Texas coast, that has been outside for 25 years now, it does require a good coat of rustoleum paint every other year. Some rust, but not much considering.
