Hi
I am moving to Belize next year with my family and need some information on schools for my 13 year old son. He is an English speaker and we would like any information anyone can give us on suitable schools for him.

We are unsure of where we will be living but belive it will be near Belize City.

We are british citizens.

Thank you for your help.

RE and JL Jones

English is the given language of Belize.

Ambergris Caye has a large Spanish population but English is the primary language of the schools and Spanish is taught.

You have to be very careful here - the classes are very large - if it was my child I would send him/her to boarding school in the UK,and fly the kid over for the holidays-I presume that you are coming to work here because that can be the only possible reason for living in/near Belize City-one of my friends, who is English(Spurs supporter),commutes from AC to the city.
Does your work contract not look after the childs education?
However St.Johns, college in Bz. is the best and you pay (possibly 6500 usd per yr) to go there-it is popular therefore you have to contact the headmaster, and I presume you will have both have to be interviewed

Sorry I don't know of any school in Belize with that price tag save Barry Bowen's Island Academy in San Pedro. St John's College (High School) is in theory free - except that one must buy all books, writing materials and uniform for one's child plus various fees at the start of the year. Total price over the year is possibly $1000 US max.

Considering that it is a Jesuit runned school whose education standards compares favorably with the best comprehensives or grammar schools in the UK, it is a bargain.

Alux -you have to be a national or resident to get those prices -the ones I quoted are for foreigners-also,in my opinion, there is no way that the education compares to top run state schools(I have a step daughter and have been through this)

You know what? here is the tele no for SJC: 00 501 22 33732. Let RJones find his own info. This way I will avoid pointless discussions.

Oh, I attended SJC myself as did several family members and I taught in Belize and the UK.

Some of my info was wrong(apol Alux)
Here is the definitive answers
Cost 1500 bzd per year covers tuition and books
The class is full for next august but if you write a very nice letter to Zelia Johnston (finace officer) stating that you are just being transferred to Belize, and you have heard that St. John high school is the best in the country etc.etc.(you will 95% be accepted)
You also have to send (fax) school reports and grades. Also two seperate letters of recommendation from the principal and a.n. other teacher.
If your son is good at sports that will also help-the one thing that was stressed is that you have to do this soonest as the school closes in two weeks.
trust this is what you are looking for.

Island Academy has a very good reputation and all the parents, that I know, who send their kids there are very pleased with the standard of education. No idea of email no. and the school is closed for the summer holidays.
