I tried this thread on ANOTHER forum and didn't get any responses. We seem to be a more VERBAL group here...

I'm beginning the process of packing stuff for THE CONTAINER. We visited a number of merchants on our last visit to Ambergris to get an idea of what was/wasn't available on the island.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has made-the-move what you wish you had brought with you and/or what you wish you hadn't spent the money to ship.

Thanks so much!!

If you are really truly moving, recommend that you bring - clothes (half of what you have packed)books, sentimental items, pots and pans and your pets. Nothing else.

Best way to face the task of tossing things - put everything but your clothes and pets in storage up there, move down and spend a year here. After that decide what you need and what you do not need. You will either be headed back home anyway and will need everything, or you will have settled here and need almost nothing. Either way, a storage facility gives you peace of mind and insurance against making decisions you may later regret.

Shoes!!!!! Good footwear is a must.

Sunglasses, polarized. A must.

Music .... your favorite CDs and stereo for those rainy days.

Your favorite bath products, not a huge selection here or peronal hygiene stuff here.
(razors, shampoo, soap, gel, etc...)

Nice fluffy towels and pillows.

A good laptop and digital camera are indispensible.

A telescope (and star chart), the night sky here is amazing.

If your loading a container, you can pack a lot of stuff in there. Whatever makes you comfy at home, I suggest you pack an amount to keep you happy here. It eases the transition.

We moved here in 88' with nothing but suitcases.

Cindy, there's a great book published by Harrowsmith called "The Night Sky"... oh, no, I think it is northern hemisphere, anyway I'll email you details; it is remarkably good but might not "work" for Belize.

You lie on your back and figure it out. It's kind of "Sky for Dummies". And it is laid out according to seasons.

Does that work SIN? Would the constellations be way out of whack in location compared to say, the 49th parallel?

I have never seen, but have heard of the Southern Cross. Proximity to the equator changes it all, does it not?
