Maybe someone can clear up a question I have regarding the recent strikes. As far as I knew, when a union goes on strike it pays the workers out of the war chest and the employer is not required to pay the workers. Is this not the case in Belize?

Ha ha. That is the theory - but how many groups do you know in this country that lets money just lay around during times of peace.

I remember when the coal miners were striking in Wales, people were quite hungry - times were very tough - lots of people lost their homes and had to rely on charity to clothe their kids.

Striking can lead to some very tough times and in this country there just aren't the saftey nets to assure a comfortable landing if you decided to buck the system.

I'm trying to understand why the teachers and BTL are expecting to be paid while they're out on strike. I was wondering if the labour laws were in someway different than the Canadian or US systems.
