Hi everyone - we've been doing a bit more research and thinking about our potential move to Belize. We are coming up with a few questions and really appreciate all that we've learned from all of you. Hope you don't mind us posting a few qestions now and then - thank you in advance for any assistance you can offer.

At the moment, we are curious as to what the electrical power capacity is on Ambergris and other parts of Belize. Is it 110/220 Voltage? Reason is my husband has some woodworking equipment that is he considering whether to bring along or not and they need 220. Thanks, Lu

He will have no problem with bringing his tools. My husband has a rather large workshop and has brought a lot of tools over the years. Some things you can buy in Belize, but more specialized tools bring down. Our only real problem with electricity is that it is often out. A back up generator is a great thing to have.

Thank you both for your comments. We have no doubt that the woodworking tools will be very useful to us, but we wonder if we'll need a converter as most of the heavier equipment runs on 220. I assume this won't be a problem judging from your reply. Thanks again, Lu

Belize's electrical system is same-same as the U.S. If you have problems, it will only be with paying for the electricity (figure roughly three times the average cost in the U.S.) and outages.

HUH,I am not sure but perhaps electricity rates vary throughout the US...cause since living here my electricity CERTAINLY is not three times the cost in the US!!!! And I have lived near the west coast of the US and the midwest! My electric is the exact same as in the states, and I run both of my A/C s daily, us my lights, cook with electric, watch my tv daily and run a few other electric run items each day!

It's great that people are paying about the same for electric in Belize as in the U.S. though the math is kind of hard to figure.

Residential electrical costs (state averages) in the U.S. in July 2005 ranged from under 6 cents per KWh to 16.73 cents (Hawaii had the most expensive). About 27 states had average costs under 9 cents and something like only 9 states had costs over 10 cents. These were California, Alaska, Hawaii and several New England states. These figures are from the U.S. government's Energy Information Center.

You can look at your BEL bill and see what the per Kwh cost is. Probably around 20 or 21 U.S. cents.

Both in the U.S. and Belize (and in most places) there are various rates depending on amount used, type of customer (residential or commercial), sometimes time of usage, etc. These are averages. BEL recently had a rate increase, and most U.S. utilities are raising rates.

I live in an all-electric house- water heater, range/oven, several fans, microwave, TV, computer system, and electric golf cart charger. My electric bill is US$50- US$55 per month. Not too bad eh?
