O.K. girls, here is another shopping excursion to consider. Go to Chetumal, stay the night at Los Cocos, have dinner and hit the mall and market. Be sure to see the museum next door to Los Cocos, it is a wonderful little museum.

Don't do it on a weekend. Many places still only work half day on saturday and closed sunday.

Obviously folks that work all week shop on the weekend too so the stores that are open are packed.

Save U supermarket carries a good stock and is often considerably less in price than here on the island.

The one big thing I notice is a pack of 26 huggies diapers here costs around $49 and I have bought at Brodies and Save U the exact same package for $37.

Kind of off the subject of BC shopping, but has anyone ever been to the duty-free zone by Corozal? What's it like? And my understanding is that only non-Belizeans can shop there. Is this correct? Thanks.

I don't normally post to this message board but do read it a lot. I live in Florida but am considering moving to San Pedro. I will be visiting for 2+ months beginning Jan. 26 and would love to do a shopping excursion if you are still doing them at that time.

Another questions...Is it possible to get organic produce in Belize? I shop at Health Food stores a lot here in the States. Are pesticides, fertilizers, etc. used in Belize as heavily as they are in the USA? And are the animals given hormones, anti-biotics, etc.?

I appreciate any info....
Thanks

Just to clarify, any visitor to Belize can go into the Free Zone at the Corozal border. BUT you have to go through immigration and pay your US$18.75 exit fee. From there, you can a) go to the casinos which are near but not in the Free Zone -- Princess, Royal Princess and the soon-to-open Las Vegas b) go into the Free Zone and buy gas or whatever, or c) go on into Mexico.

Visitors do have to surrender their passport at the Free Zone gate, but they get it back when they leave.

In fact, the whole thing has a logic that escapes me. The casinos, for example, can be visited by Belizeans or permanent residents who don't have to pay the exit fee, and by Mexicans, but not by tourists in Belize unless they pay the $18.75 exit fee every time they go.

There's really not very much of interest in the Free Zone, unless you're in to cheap Chinese clothes and household gee gaws ... or fuel. A couple of weeks ago, I think I paid about Us$2.75 a gallon for diesel there (prices are by the liter), a savings of 75 cents or so a gallon from the Belizean price, but not a huge amount. You'd save more on gas.

On the subject of Belize City, I'm impressed by the improvements there. There's been a real effort to clean up the streets -- both in terms of safety and in actual garbage. More buildings are sporting new coats of paint. Signing is much better, with directions posted to main points of interest for visitors. The entire waterfront area in the Fort George and down by the Princess and Marina Towers is looking great -- it doesn't even look like BElize City anymore, more like the seafront of a city in the main Caribbean. Crime against visitors is down -- I can't recall when the last time I heard of a serious incident.

Of course, it's still Belize City. A couple of days ago, I was hit up three times in 15 minutes by the "gimme dollar" guys, and right across the park from the National Handicraft Centre and around the corner from the Radisson there was a homeless guy, stark naked, taking a bath in a ditch.
