Iím traveling down to the island early next week. Thereís been some great advice both on the message board and on the web site in general, so a big thanks to all who have contributed. All that I have read has fuelled my excitement to experience your beautiful Island first hand, however, I have been repeatedly warned of the dreaded Sand flies by doom-spreaders, how big a problem are they, and are there any precautions I can take to avoids the bites ?

I seem to be a favored treat for the sand flies. I also get strong reactions to the bite. A small welt that becomes an oozing blister appears that is terribly itchy. It takes a couple weeks for it to go away. Some relief after the bite is daubing on diluted ammonia or cortisone cream. Not enough relief in my book however.

For me what really works at a deterrent is a bug spray that contains DEET. That's an acronym for some really long chemical term. I use Deep Woods Off Spray it contains DEET. Regular Off also contains DEET but in a lower concentration. Make sure to get your feet and ankles, basically anywhere that is not fully protected by clothing.

Pack this spray in your checked luggage as I just had mine taken away at security when I put it in my carryon.

Have a fun trip!

Some people are sensitive to deet, you can also use Skin So Soft or a good coat of baby oil.
