I am taking a weeks vacation to the Cayes of Belize. I was hoping to do some bonefishing there. I have never been bonefishing, and frankly, I really know nothing about it.

I was planning on taking my rod (6'6" medium action, 4-12lb) and reel (spinning). I am going to put 4 lb test on my reel. However, I have no idea what is used to catch bonefish...flies? lures? bait? plastic worms/frogs?

I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me out by letting me know what would be good to bring with me. Thanks.

why do you want to fish for bones? aren't they hard catch? you can't eat bones either once you've caught them. i don't understand!

Erica...If you are spin fishing, I would go with 6lb line. most likely the "flats" have coral rubble on them and are jagged. What's worked best for me are Wiggle Jigs. They imitate small crabs. I usually tip them with shrimp (if you can find some) or hermit crabs. Hire some local kids to find you a dozen or two. Bring a cig lighter to get them out of shells. I have caught bones off the docks on CC, but it's tough because of the eel grass. Best to hire a guide for a half day at first and if it works go for a day.
