Ellis Nicholas, one of the Paradise Down dive crew, was seriously injured, in a boating accident last Wednesday. A wave rocked the boat, and several people fell out. Ellis was hit by the boat, and his arm was chopped by the propeller. Nobody else was seriously injured.
For nine days, Ellis was in the public hospital in Belize City. The surgeon there advised that he should seek treatment from a hand specialist in Guatamala, and Ellis flew there yesterday morning. Tendons will be removed from his feet or legs to replace those that were destroyed in his arm. He'll need several operations, over the course of a month or more. They can save the hand, and hopefully he'll actually be able to use it.
Generally, medical expenses from an employment injury are covered by the employer. Unfortuneately, Paradise Down's insurance covers only passengers, and not employees. The medical expenses have to come out of OJ (the owner)'s pocket. He is either not able, or not willing, to pay for care outside of the public hospital in Belize City.
We're not sure yet how much this is going to cost. So far, the estimate is at least $15,000-$20,000us. So far, we've raised $1500, plus airfare to Guatemala. Donations can be made on Caye Caulker, at Atlantic Bank. Those who are not on the caye can donate via Neteller or Paypal. For more information email
