Ellis Nicholas, one of the Paradise Down dive crew, was seriously injured, in a boating accident last Wednesday. A wave rocked the boat, and several people fell out. Ellis was hit by the boat, and his arm was chopped by the propeller. Nobody else was seriously injured.

For nine days, Ellis was in the public hospital in Belize City. The surgeon there advised that he should seek treatment from a hand specialist in Guatamala, and Ellis flew there yesterday morning. Tendons will be removed from his feet or legs to replace those that were destroyed in his arm. He'll need several operations, over the course of a month or more. They can save the hand, and hopefully he'll actually be able to use it.

Generally, medical expenses from an employment injury are covered by the employer. Unfortuneately, Paradise Down's insurance covers only passengers, and not employees. The medical expenses have to come out of OJ (the owner)'s pocket. He is either not able, or not willing, to pay for care outside of the public hospital in Belize City.

We're not sure yet how much this is going to cost. So far, the estimate is at least $15,000-$20,000us. So far, we've raised $1500, plus airfare to Guatemala. Donations can be made on Caye Caulker, at Atlantic Bank. Those who are not on the caye can donate via Neteller or Paypal. For more information email [email protected].

Ellis can recieve cards or packages at:

Ellis Nicholas
17 Calle 33-45 Zona 7
Villa Linda 2
Guatemala City, Guatemala

Thanks to everyone who's already contributed, and thanks in advance to those who will be contributing in the coming weeks.

Ryan

It appears that Paradise Down did not have adequate insurance in place to cover his employees, as well as his passengers. This is an oversight on his part. He can be sued to cover the medical expenses.

Social Security should also be covering some of the expenses as well, although this would be pretty limited.

Ryan,

What comes first, the operation or the money? Will he be sitting in Guatemala until the cash is raised?

Is the paypal address [email protected]?

We are crushed by this news. Our prayers are with Ellis and his family. Please take care of him.

Al & Jen,

Ellis had his first surgery here in Guatemala this weekend, grafting muscle and skin from his back, chest, and leg, into his arm. He was released from intensive care yesterday, and is watching cartoons with his mom right now. Partial payment has been made, and another partial payment will be made tomorrow.

Yes, the paypal address is [email protected]. Thanks for your concern.

Ryan

Everyone on Caye Caulker loves to talk and nothing ever gets solved that way.

Hi Ryan,

We miss having you on IM all the time but we're glad you're there with Ellis. Please keep us updated on his health, happiness, and cartoon watching. How is Ellen? I miss her and will hopefully see her in May.

Today I was looking at photos of all of us from last Easter's sailboat race... what a blast (blur?) it was. I can't wait for us all to be together again!!!

See you in 1 month and 3 days, but who's counting?

Love,
Jen
