Basketball personality Jaime Zaldivar, 62, who died from cancer on Friday, May 19, was buried in his native Caye Caulker on Tuesday, May 23, after funeral services were held at St. Joseph Church in Belize City.

Zaldivar, who had been ailing for about three months, passed away about 10:30 a.m. a this home on Simon Lamb Street.

A top ranking basketball player as a young man, Zaldivar's career was cut short in 1971 when he lost his right leg after being badly burned in a terrible traffic accident on the Western Highway between Miles 7 and 8. (Four athletes died in that accident).

Zaldivar became a basketball referee and alter a basketball coach. He was the first head coach of the Kremandala Raiders when semi-pro basketball began in Belize in 1992.

Jaime is survived by three sons: Ariel, Pierre and Reri.
