The First Annual San Pedro Wahoo Challenge

San Pedro Town, Belize, December 6, 2006---Rod and reel on hand - line, hook and sinker ready! It is time to gear up for a spectacular fishing tournament that’s coming early next year. The San Pedro Game Fishing Association and The Rock Fishing Team proudly announce the first deep sea fishing tournament for 2007 --- The San Pedro Wahoo Challenge.

This fishing tournament will be a Wahoo only competition. The event has been planned on the peak of the Wahoo run and the date was carefully selected for when the fish feed the most. So, we should see plenty of fish on the scales. With the tournament being done during high tourist season, it will serve as great entertainment for visitors – in fact there are already several confirmed reports of fishermen from abroad getting ready to come down for this event.

The tournament, which is being sponsored by several local businesses and individuals, will take place on Saturday, January 20, 2007. The captains briefing, weigh station and awards ceremony will be at Eden Park Villas (3 miles north San Pedro). The Wahoo Challenge is a non-profit event and all monies raised from sponsorship and entry fees will go towards prize giving, event promotion, and a FAD (Fish Aggregating Device) project that is being planned for San Pedro. Additionally, with a percentage of the funds raised, the San Pedro Wahoo Challenge will offer a scholarship for a tour guide course.

We invite everyone to participate in this exciting event. There is plenty of time to get your boat ready.

What's a "fish aggregating device"?

FAD's are any variety of man-made anchored/floating devices designed to annoy and prove bothersome to various species of fish... oh wait, that's a fish aggravating device...

So tecnically speaking, one can not host the "first annual" anything... one of the more oft made mistakes in the English language. "First", yes, "2nd Annual" but of course... "First Annual"... such thing does not exist.

Krefish: fish tend to gather (aggregate) around floating logs and such (I'd imagine the reason is that such attract small fish feeding on algae & whatnot, who in turn attract larger fish, the kind we eat or stuff and mount on the wall in our livingroom.) A FAD is simply a deliberate/man made version of such that is anchored so that fisherman know where to find it (as opposed to run into it.) Basically, the fish version of your office water-cooler or coffee-maker.

krehfish,

Just got back from Andros recently and fished for Wahoo there two days. Most productive area was by an Autec Buoy(Us Navy maintained) anchored out offshore about 5 miles beyond the reef in 4500' of water. Caught 1/2 dozen Wahoo and every hit was within 200' of that buoy. Guess you could call that an FAD and it sure works.(FYI - trolled at 17 knots, needed propellors to catch up with those lures but had a number of hits - trolled a lot slower in AC and caught uugatts!)
