Hi guys,

Anyone have any recommendations for a hotel in or near Tulum. Don't really want to go to Playa. Looking for something quaint as opposed to really fancy. Boutique is fine, but with a Mexican rather than european feel (lots of europeans running hotels there it seems - don't want a french or italian hotel in mexico). Something in the village would be nice. Suggestions welcome and thanks in advance.

Puerto Aventuras is a WONDERFUL little fishing village, clean, middle class, quiet and convenient to Tulum. We stayed there 3 different times and was very happy with it. Tulum was just a short bus ride down the road. Look it up. Very affordable as well.

Thanks Debbie,

Had a look but all I can find are big resorts. Not really our cup of tea. We prefer small, intimate, boutique like and off the beaten track. Eclectic is more our style, but very much appreciate your suggestion.

Hi Collyk,
Have stayed several times in Akumal - 20 mins north (1/2 way between Tulum and Playa) at Las Villas Akumal - on jade Beach, a few minutes drive from the village itself. Nice units (1,2 or 3 BR condos)well maintained and convenient to alot of stuff - or nothing at all!

We always went in mid-late summer during turtle nesting season. Really enjoyed the village on both the local and beach sides of the road, people, etc. PM me if you want more info on CEA and other neat stuff around the area that we have enjoyed in the past.

colly, i stayed in a big place you wont want called xpu-ha (but was nice), but db is right, akumal is a ver cool and pretty little town. i have photos posted of the lagoon there if you want to see how neat it is. if you go, a 2 hr bus ride to coba ruins(much older than tulum) is worth the climb for the view.

SJ, that's sad to hear. When I first went to Xpu-Ha in 1988, there were two huts and a palapa bar. We were the only turistas there. I second everyone on Akumal. It was the first resort on the coast, set up for divers back in the 1960s. time has passed it by a little, which only adds to the charm.

When you find a big kettle of crazy, it's best not to stir it.

We stayed at Hotel Latino in September on our way from Cancun to Belize. A block off the main street, easy walk to the bus station. It was ok, looks lots better on its web site. The staircase about did me in, tight spiral, uneven stones, no railing. Tough for those of us with bifocals and carrying bags. If I stay in Tulum again, it will either be on the beach, or I might try Luna del Sur. It looks lovely.

We stayed at Cabanas la Conchita on the beach a few years ago. Very nice, but from there you can't walk very far on the beach.
